In my opinion, the most refreshing thing about pGSQL after my experiences with commercial RDBMS is that you no longer have to go back to your slave master salesperson, who has you by your gonads, to ask persmission and get price raped when you want to add more processors or move to higher machine and what not. You have complete freedom to do as you wish.

Hmm.. you can pay $40,000 per processor or you can pay $0.

In my opinion, paying for software is fast approaching a thing of the past. Its foolish to overpay for RDBMS.

In my opinion, you can pay and waste money to support someone elses ovrepaid extravagant lifestyle or you can keep it in your own pocket and feed your kids or provide jobs to people that really need it.

here are a few quotes from the web:

"http://www.enterprisedb.com/ [enterprisedb.com]

it's basically postgresql with an oracle compatibility layer.

Postgres is a worthy RDBMS in its own right, but it's no Oracle. Of course, a lot of people use Oracle's RDBMS when postgres or MySQL would do just as well.

but the number of places where "when you need Oracle" is rapidly dwindling.

Features added recently or upcoming in 8.1 (now in beta2) include

Add in that PostgreSQL's core engine has long been about 5x faster than Oracle's (not to mention orders of magnitude easier to set up and administer) and basically the only reason left to go with Oracle is their clustering. No doubt there are places that need that, but it's a pretty small niche." Received on Tue Sep 20 2005 - 14:38:05 CDT
