Agree with Mark. I'd just add:
Programming in college does not necessarily reflect programming work.
(With the exception that I've seen programming managers hire their
classmates to do the hot acronym of the year). So don't assume that
you are a bad programmer. A lot of business programming is just plain
following directions. I have seen an amazing number of hotshots that
don't get that.
Get the degree (not necessarily CS, but rather something that interests you). College degree is just plain a necessity these days. There are plenty of exceptions to this, I think everyone knows a programmer (or programming shop owner) who didn't finish college, but eventually it makes a diff, especially when you decide it's time for the MBA, and for some hiring/promotion HR drek.
Helpdesk work is a dead-end, but at least is plentiful.
There will generally be ten times more programming work than the other things (design, management, DBA etc.). Middle management has been decimated over the last couple of decades, but does seem to be coming back. A couple of years of actual programming will likely show you upward paths.
Definitely easier to get a job if you have skills besides programming
(accounting certainly helps, as well as what Mark said).
