Jumped to your question too soon, and your question probably has nothing to do with the problem at hand. Rereading you original post, I now tend towards thinking your AdBlock interferes with Java - or the FireFox Java is too new for the 8i navigator.
All I get is a Java error: cannot load java from <location>, but docco is readable
