Why bad design?  It seems that it is a normal way of representing hierchical
information in tables.  Just like EMPLOYEES table has a MANAGER_ID  column
referencing another rows in the EMPLOYEES table.  And, isnt it normal for
one to select all the line managers of a given employee.
