Sauro, to add to what Sybrand said:

Did you update the statistics after loading the table and again after deleting large quantities of data from the table? If the CBO thinks the table holds a different number of rows that what is actually there then it could be chosing bad plans to solve your query requests.

This assumes that you have properly indexed the table to begin with.
