You should NEVER EVER update data dictionary views!!!!! You were shown the appropiate way to do this. Where the heck did you learn to screw the data dictionary and consequently invalidate your support contract.
As you shouldn't screw the datadictionary, you also don't need grants.

Time to read the Concepts manual, ASAP.
