The tric you need is
either
- to read the Oracle Server Utilities Manual - to query the groups archives at groups.google.com preferably prior to posting, as this is a FAQ (Most people do the same thing like you)

So for the umpteenth time
You need the lower version exp to connect to the higher version database. This has applied to all versions since Oracle 5.

So in your case, the 9i exp against the 10g database. THAT is the only 'trick' you need, and as it is the proper procedure, it is not a tric.
