You need to put the database in hot backup mode. (you don't give a version - for 10g, alter database begin backup.. 9i, tablespace by tablespace...)

After that completes, split your mirror. Then, end backup mode. AND THEN, very important, immediately backup all of the archived redo logs you created during the backup (backup will be unusable without them).
