I think you need to clarify what you mean by "the installation went sour". Creating an instance called 'orcl' (or 'sales', or any other valid name for that matter) should not have prevented a successful installation. What is happening during the installation that makes you think there is something wrong with the instance name? By the way, you can install Oracle server and not create an instance. Simply select 'Software Only'. Create databases later.
