Thomas: If you really do have a queue there -- skipping the locked rows would probably
actually "work" if the messages don't need be processed in order.

Casey: Yeah, this truly is a multi-producer / single-consumer message queue, physically implemented with a table. A shame I didn't get in on the design-level of this app... it would have been fun to design using AQ objects (a first for me, anyway).
