This is not new. Compare attitudes towards theft in Sparta and in Athens.

What is "our society"?

One of the things going on right now is the redefnition of "our society". Our society is no longer defined by national borders and ethnic cultures. The internet and satellite TV has made it possible to pump the same culture into everybody's life. In countries as diverse as France and India, the global culture is seen as a national threat.

"Our society" has HIV positive people, to the tune of scores of millions.
"Our society" has terrorists, regardless of which country you live in.
"Our society" has job competition between people whose parents earned $100K
a year,

and people whose parents earned $100 a year.
"Our society" has people who do not resepect intellectual property, to the
tune of billions of people.
"Our society" has people who are chronically hungry, again to the tune of
billions of people.

Unless present trends change, everyone will be from "around the world" in ten or fifteen years. Received on Mon Oct 11 2004 - 07:54:17 CDT
