Redo logs marked as 'ACTIVE'

I am running Oracle 8.1.7. I understand that if a database is undergoing crash recovery redo logs would be marked as 'ACTIVE' in the appropriate V$ views, but I read somewhere that they would also be marked as 'ACTIVE' when the database is experiencing intense, long-running transactions. Why would this be?
