If you are on Solaris (8 onwards) , prstat is better than top. top is a generic software for solaris and hence does not use solaris internal counters and uses a lot of workarounds to get the data. In the Top output, CPU represents only the time spent by the process in User Mode. It does not include the time spent in kernel mode and I/O wait. In short top is an outsider for solaris, use the insider prstat instead.
