We have similar "rules" to discourage DBAs using top, especially when there is a high load. But I can't understand why sar. Did they ever explain that ?

You can use "top -b" to get a snapshot of top. This will not use a lot of CPU cycles like the continuous mode. Usually I find that good enough for performance tuning purposes.

Your sys adms need to learn how to trust DBAs.
