Right now, unfortunately, there are not a lot of alternatives and that is a major problem I am working to rectify. Two days from now, Thursday to be exact, I will be at a major California university, trying to help them move away from an OCP based education system (BTW enrollment has dropped like a stone in recent years) to one that provides career based education. I have also been approached by a technology focused college in Arizona too.
There will hopefully be an alternative in the future. For now we are stuck with OCP mills that churn out, unqualified, a large number of unqualified graduates with an overinflated sense of their own abilities.
Does this mean there isn't some value in the OCP? In my opinion there is none. Yes there is learning there. But there is also learning of information that is incorrect. And students are in no place to make the determination of what is correct and what is not.
This is not to say that I don't make mistakes: More than I'd care to admit. But the difference between the two approaches are enormous. Consider the implications of a school that had no patients, no physicians, but taught people how to answer the questions on a state or provincial medical exam. Is this the person you'd want as your surgeon? I think not.
