I use Gnus (comes with Emacs) and I love it. But you have to know Emacs so it usually isn't an acceptable choice. But, since you are on windows, I would recommend you look into XNews. Its free and has loads of functionality. It has a bit of a learning curve, but only because of the functionality that you probably aren't used to or even would be aware exists. I don't even know for certain if you can ignore cross-posted articles, but it supports scoring and that is the mechanism that Gnus uses, so I would guess you could do it.

I can tell you this, the people that use it absolutely love it.
