A more comparable tool to VS .NET is Oracle JDevloper. Like VS .NET it gives you a visual way to build Web applications, Client Servr applications, Web services or anything else that you want.
Take a look at the Oracle JDeveloper 10g demos at: http://otn.oracle.com/products/jdev to see how it looks and works and what the development is like.

Why you should choose a Java approach over a .NET approach? Well this is a long discussion covered in many places but it comes down to the word "choice"
with Java you can choose your Operating System and your software supplier.
