Uninstall Oracle 7 Client tools for WinNT

Hi,

I have a WinNT machine from which I'm trying to connect to an Oracle 9.2 instance to do some database development (Oracle 9i Enterprice Edition Release 9.2.0.1 to be precise).

If I telnet to the db server I can use all the unix tools with no problem; the database is running fine there. But I cannot connect to the db from this WinNT box.

There seems to be various version of various things installed. I've been getting different errors all day long. Here's a sample.

Oracle 7 Client Tools:

sqlplus -- installed, "Error 6 initializing" is the most recent error for that tool. "Message file sp1<lang>.msb not found" is another.

Enterprise manager - "Can't register VOBMGR client" or "TNS: Could not resolve service name" SQLNet "Easy Configuration" now gives "nt.stp FILE_NOT_FOUND." (This is after about the 5th crashed attempt to run the installer)

There's another tool in use here called Sql Navigator. That doesn't work either. ("TNS Could not resolve service name.")

It's probably some path or ORACLE_HOME problem. But I don't know what is even a correct working location for oracle home. There are at least 4 different candidates on the system. At this point the best option seems to be to uninstall everything and try for a clean install. But the installers do not work. This is a machine that's been used by someone else for years; that person is now away on an extended leave and I'm trying to fill in for him. The Oracle 7 installer dies with Dr Watson every time. The Oracle 8i client crashes with a blue screen of death mid way through. Other posts on the newsgroup indicate that the Oracle 7 installer has a Y2K problem that's been fixed. The fix is supposedly available from ftp.oracle.com. I cannot connect to ftp.oracle.com ("connection refused"). The other source mentioned is the metalink site, but that requires registration. Toward that end, I tracked down an old list of CSI numbers. None of them works. I checked Oracle Technology Network too, but no joy.

So...Does anyone have an alternate source for the Oracle 7 installer? I'd like to try uninstalling everything and re-installing the 8i tools again. Any other advice most welcome.

Thanks,
