If the environment doesn't support an external metadata repository (such as Designer), then I find the comments are the easiest way of recording the actual meaning of tables and columns. When working with some 'professionally developed' system where the tables and columns are coded as German (or other language) abbreviations or acronyms, any clue to the meaning of the name is appreciated.

If you are 'into' acronyms and abbreviations, metadata descriptions to explain the true meaning of Christmas (or the tables/columns) will be very useful. Whether you keep them as comments for everyone to see, or in a repository, is up to you.
