Hi Daniel,

The current IP standard is called IPv4 and the new proposed standard is called IPv6. It increases the address space makes connections more secure and many other things. In short its a ground-up rethink of the IP protocol for the future. Just this week your government announced that 6 DoD sites are now connected to an IPv6 testbed called moonv6 and is the largest IPv6 network in your country. The DoD announced in June this year that IPv6 will be the standard by 2008. See for more info.
