Elegant explanations never seenms to help Daniel. At least not in my experience. :-(

One has to drive the point home at times. Mercilessly and brutally. It worked pretty well in me infantry days. ;-)

Exactly. If the OP's brief is to solve the problem, then presenting the very simple idea (of doing a CREATE TABLE plus SELECT DISTINCT) is exactly within the scope. And if he does not have the Oracle rights to do it (which does make sense if this is a production environment), then a standard Change Control procedure is in order, using the assistance of DBA to get the job done. Together.

This Us Versus Them attitude that seems prevelant in many IT departments is just plain stupid. And should be dealt with swiftly. With a lead pipe and harsh words if needed.
