How could I find oracle version?

OK, oracle instance version is in v$instance. What about the database? I have dbf files which I don't have idea what version they are. I would recreate control files but what upgrade script am I supposed to run? Speaking of manageability wouldn't it be wonderful to have a unified script so that it would be oracle who would have to figure out from what version to upgrade, not poor me?
