Registry or environment vars?

Hi all,

Can someone explain *just* how reliant Oracle 9i is on environment variables in the Win32 environment? Looking at the registry, I see that ORACLE_BASE, ORACLE_HOME and ORACLE_SID are all defined there, but I know from experience that Oracle doesn't always behave itself unless at least some of them are set as environment variables too. Is there a clear distinction between some Oracle tools that use the registry and some that use environment vars? Is it good practice to set up those vars just in case?

TIA
