OK, being unobjective. Who is unobjective? You are explaining you don't have *any* ( I repeat ANY control) over your datamodel, and you are sacrificing consistency for performance. And in a different reply you state you have transactions going on for 7 hours. So, inevitable conclusion: you have no control over your database, you live in a mess, and you are now trying to blame the locking behavior of Oracle instead of trying to resolve the mess. You should concentrate on getting the mess resolved instead of asking for 'clues' to continue symptomfighting. Because THAT is exactly what you are doing!!!
