You can run your streaming application on your Solaris box. You can install Oracle 8.1.7 client on this Solaris box and have it connect to an Oracle database on another server. This other server can be SPARC Solaris, Linux, Windows, HP-UX, OS/390, etc. You just won't be able to run a 9i database on the Solaris Intel box. But running the client will work just fine. And you will be able to connect just fine with 8.1.7 client to a 9i database.
