Newbie cannot login

I installed Oracle 8i

The database I created was called test1

It gave this during install

global datbase name : test1
database SID : test1
internal account password: oracle
SYS account password : change_on_install SYSTEM account password : manager

I went to SQL Plus & tried to launch it. No combination of username / passwords as suggested by Oracle above worked. I get the error

(I am not sure what to install at HOSTSTRING. I assume it is the hostname I tried blank as well)

ORA-01034:ORACLE not available Received on Wed Jul 30 2003 - 20:55:00 CDT
