Hi

It is possible to make 9i behave as 8i but it is a big security hole to do so. This hole was closed to stop any user having SELECT ANY TABLE from being able to also see the data dictionary. I would lobby the application vendor to either allow you to add the keywords "as sysdba" or to use another user.

If you must make it behave as 8i then set the O7_DICTIONARY_ACCESSIBILITY parameter to TRUE in the init.ora file and start the database with pfile='init.ora' file and then you can migrate the init.ora file to spfile.

If it is just to install the app then change the parameter and install it and then put it back asap!!

hth

kind regards

Pete
