I tend to agree that going for DBA from scratch (i.e. without going through some developper path) is not a good idea. An "entry level" DBA job is typically filled by an experienced (2 to 3 years) Oracle developper.

I guess the main reason is that a DBA position is kind of critical: as a DBA, you are expected to keep the database up and running: so backups, recovery procedures, preventing crashes etc are all very important. An unavailable database often means loss of business etc. A wrong decision by an inexperienced DBA could have painful consequences.
