Suggest you get the whole story from either http://www.oracle.com (marketing version) or http://otn.oracle.com (technical version)

The synopsis is:

Oracle fully supports LDAP and even has a certified V3 compliant LDAP server called OiD (Oracle internet Directory). There are even utilities for sync'ing OiD to other directories.

However, LDAP is only a spec ... to make it work you need a schema appropriate to the task at hand, and there are a lot of proprietary schemas out there, including the ones Oracle has created for their own Single Sign-On and other security capabilities.

Your API/JNDI questions are answered in a lot of detail in the OiD and Oracle Developers manuals at http://otn.oracle.com
