OK - so I looked thru the registry, and found none. It's a non-standard entry, I suppose, like tns_admin. Then searched the docu, and even in Oracle8i Configuration Parameters and the Registry (Appendix C - Windows Admin Guide) there is no mention of such entry in the registry.

The Windows manuals for 9iR2 state there's a value ORA_SID_PWFILE (http://download-west.oracle.com/docs/cd/B10501_01/win.920/a95491/admin.htm#1006254) Searching back of ora_sid_pwfile, the only mention of such an evironment setting for 8i is in the error manual: look up ora-1990.

So it is rather ill documented for 8i, so say the least. Did not bother to check for 9iR1
