Not to insult MS Access any more than I would insult a stack of 3x5 cards ... but learning Access first will only mean you get to spend countless hours unlearning bad habits.

The place to start is learning data normalization, construction of logical and physical Entity Relationship models, and the SQL language. But as someone pointed out ... just get Oracle ... you can download it for free.
