If you are going to use the internet you have rules you should follow just as in any other human endeavour. The usenet has rules and the c.d.o. usenet groups have a FAQ you can and should have read. It is just common courtesy just as not going to a neighbors house for dinner, walk in with your business cards and brochures, and start selling them life insurance during dinner.

We have a FAQ ... read it.
We have a usenet group specifically designated for marketing and public relations ... use it.

And yes I am offended as no doubt are others by spamming. Offended enough to swear that I will never visit a spammer's web site and never do business with them unless they apologize. It is the only way I have to fight back ... so I do it with what spammers crave most ... my dollars.
