it looks to the "pentium 4 with jre 1.1.8" bug. If your PC is a pentium 4 go to Oracle's metalink and ask for the patch correcting this problem, or it will never start. In windows 2000 there is a weird workaround (destroying a DLL file !) but I don't know if it exists something like that for Linux.
