character set conversions

Does anyone know if there is a list somewhere of which character sets are
supersets of whichh others, as this is a requirement for ALTER DATABASE
CHARACTER SET NNNNNN; I'd have expected to find it in the manual, but don't.
I do find the reference to getting consulting in to do the job though :(
