The 'Pentium 4 bug' causes the installer not to run AT ALL.

There are problems on all versions of Oracle, if you are connected to the database server using Microsux Terminal Server. In that case the BEQueath protocol doesn't work. You can get around that by saving the database scripts created during running dbca, firing up a command box, issue
set oracle_sid=<your sid>
and running the scripts saved in the previous script.

I would advise against being 'smart' and hack yourself out.
