Problems installing 9i on Linux (SuSE 8.0), sorry long posting!

Hello!

Since I knew about the plans to use an oracle Database in our company, I started reading this newsgroup and read about many problems installing the oracle database on a linux system. So I printed out most of the threads, also the installation guide on docs.oracle.com and began to prepare the system.

First of all some facts about the systems:

My fileserver:

AMD Athlon 2000+, 512 MB RAM, 4 x 120 GB HDD in an RAID level I array, i gave him 4 GB swap according to the problem of less swap space during the installation. It works fine as a samba-server for our windows-clients.

2. Older System as backup and emergency-server for oracle

Celeron 300A with 256 MB RAM, 4x8,5 GB HDD in an RAID level I array too. 2 GB swap-space according to the known problems. I use the machine as backup- and tapeserver...

Both have a SuSE linux 8.0-system running fine. Just minimal graphic X11-servers installed, in general i only use the console. SUN-java installed, apache running as httpd, gcc installed on both.

I began installing the oracle database last saturday starting on the tapeserver just to test the routines. All changes in the system parameters on both systems are definitively identical!

mount-points /oracle and /oracledb were created, user and group oracle, orainstall and dba exist, the user oracle has the ksh as default shell, whyever this is necessary. Environment variables and kernel parameters were proved and set, if they were not high enough. And, what shall I say? Installation worked fine, I logged in as the oracle user, started the graphic shell, started the installer and after the three CD's were copied, the additional features installation started (first prompting me to run an additional script as the root user) and everything finished without any problems. Database was created and is running.

After that experience I began installing the real system on the fileserver. And spent a frustrating weekend here! :-/

mount-points here: /opt/oracle and /opt/oracledb, the parameters and environment are identical with the other machine. I can't find any difference, the CD's are read and all files are successfully copied, the installer asks me to run the root.sh-script as on the tapeserver and after that EXITS without prompting an error report or anything else! WHAM, all windows are closed and nothing more happens...

I checked the log-file of the session and can't find anything wrong in there. The end of the file looks like that:

Can anybody out there please tell me what went wrong? I don't suceed in interpreting these messages...
