Oracle client install makes NFS browsing painfully slow...

My current guess is that my problems are NOT related to the oracle database on the server...

The problem has presented itself on 3 separate Dell Pentium 4 class machines running Windows 2000 (with or without current service packs). All other machines are running fine...

I have tried using Oracle 7.3 and 8.1.1.7 (I recognize that neither are supported on a 2000 client) and in all cases directory browsing has crawled after the installation.

The delay exists when browsing a network share via drive letter or UNC. I have tried fiddling with network drivers and tried browsing by IP address and network name. Performance is the same either way.

My best guess is that the Oracle client has loaded (or overwritten) a file that 2000 uses to browse NFS shares. I suppose it is also possible that Oracle is trying to intervene somehow when the client attempts to view network shares.

The problem does NOT go away if I uninstall Oracle and delete the oracle directory.

Note that the client does not (appear) to experience any delays browsing local drives or the Internet.

I would like to resolve this problem (if reasonably possible) without upgrading the client's version of Oracle.

Any thoughts, experiences or suggestions on the subject will be appreciated.

Thanks,
