Can anyone shed any light on why various Oracle applications and services have an asterisk in their names? E.g. SQL*PLUS, SQL*LOADER etc.? Is there some particular meaning or amusing story behind this?

Not an important question, but one which occurs to me occasionally when I recall explaining to a PHB why it was not a good idea to rename his sqlplus executable to sql*plus ;-)
