SQL*Plus has the same two-splitted audience as the UNIX - vi. I terms of usability fashions, they are "out of date" - on the other hand, they are most powerful.
So still it is not that all tools must be made for us, we too have to get used to the tools given.

But anyway, there are a lot of other tools that You could use:

I a course some time ago we used Golden and PLEdit, both shipped by Benthic, as a third party tool. Golden can be a good gui replacement for SQL*Plus. On the other hand : it is not freeware ...

Just as a tip.
