Even in general conversations there is a thing called common knowledge. And yes sometimes the newcomer is faulted (usually teased: "EVERYBODY knows that!")

We are not being mean. But in this case, the answer is in the ORACLE SQL manual, in about any book on ORACLE, in the newsgroup archives (search GOOGLE), and likely in the brain of the OP's office mate or his DBA.
