Opinion Needed: JVM performance?

Oracle 8.1.7.4.1 on Windows 2000 Adv Server.

Our Oracle install is always done as a "custom" install and we do not install the JVM by default. We are looking at installing the JVM but I would enjoy to hearing opinions from people who have installed it in the past. Have you seen a degredation in performance? Our plans are to contiue using PL/SQL and to call wrapped Java Classes (not JDBC, rather more specific calcualtion type functions).
