I hear your frustration. But can we really blame the high unemployment rate here in America in the high tech field on H1 visas? There are lots of "fake" job listings out there.

As a former US government worker, we often outsourced IT projects. We required that companies that bid on the contract be able to demonstrate that they can attract a certain type of talent. They don't have to actually have them on staff ... just be able to show that they could get them if they won the contract. So these companies advertise for a job, collect a bunch of resumes, and attach them to the "bid" for a particular IT contract. This has been done for years ... even when the IT job market wasn't so dismal.

Companies have to pay rather large "fees" to the federal government to take on H1 visa holders. It is in their best interest to keep that slot open to H1 only (or they'll have to pay another fee to re-establish it). As a US citizen (born here), I sometimes lament jobs being taken away by those who aren't citizens. But what can be done? Tell everyone to go home? What do you use as the cutoff date ... everyone who arrived here after such-and-such a date has to go back home? Who assigns such a date?

Life isn't fair ... and neither is the job market. When a company advertises for a job and receives hundreds of resumes ... many of which are from equally capable people, the choice is often "arbitrary" ... and often unfair. But that's life.

As for the predictions of the high tech companies. Sure they thought it was going to be a rosy future. But the trouble with predictions is that they're quite often wrong. Just look back at all the doom and gloom that was predicted for 1 Jan 2000 ... you'll see that it's only hindsight that's 20/20. The predictions of those high tech industry watchers were wrong.

And by the way, I've never heard of a DBA (H1 or otherwise) working for $5/hour. Received on Wed Oct 16 2002 - 11:41:18 CDT
