Some of the smaller Oracle shops don't have enough money to pay for an Oracle DBA full-time. I know one place that had an overworked sysdamin who was asked to also perform the DBA duties "part-time" (very common in very small organizations), so this DBA with training only and no experience (we'll call him Carlo, since that's his name) asked if they'd take him on as an apprentice. They said sure ... but we can't pay you very much. He's been doing this for about 6 months now, gaining his experience.

How did Carlo find the job? The small company doesn't have an HR department, so they didn't advertise in the newspaper or on the Internet. Carlo found out about the job using the old-fashioned technique of networking - and I'm not talking about computer networking. He joined local user's groups, went to trade shows, talked to everyone who'd listen. Lots of people got to know Carlo ... and one of them happened to know someone else who worked for this small company.

Finding any job at the entry level can sometimes be speeded up by establishing a people network. BTW, it also works for those of us who are "overqualified" for all those 3-5 year jobs. Received on Mon Oct 14 2002 - 12:33:40 CDT
