Oracle and ANSI/ISO Standard SQL

Hi,

Oracle supports the ANSI/ISO SQL standard (SQL:1999 Core Level with some exceptions). I'm passing on some recent comments and reports about activity in that area.

In August, Oracle's Jim Melton -- the editor for the ANSI committee -- posted a "Draft" of the next version of the standard, which is now being referred to as SQL:2003, because it will probably become official in late 2003. The new standard can be downloaded in .pdf form, from http://sqlstandards.org/SC32/WG3/Progression_Documents/Informal_working_drafts/

In September, Oracle Technology Network published two articles: "The Big Deal About Standards"
which is a reminiscence about tussles and triumphs at standards-committee meetings, and "Oracle's Standards Philosophy"
which is an interview with two Oracle people who say where the company stands on standards issues.

My own contribution to this is an article which dbazine.com has just published:
"SQL Standards" (http://dbazine.com/gulutzan3.html) which compares IBM DB2 and Microsoft SQL Server and Oracle9i, feature by feature, with respect to SQL-92, SQL:1999, and SQL:2003.

Oracle's semi-formal statement of standards compliance, incidentally, is in the manual. For an example see
