For the most part, you may even be able to use Oracle 7 client and middleware to connect to an 8i or 9i database and vice versa. *However*, and the emphasis is on *However*, it is always a good idea to use same client/middleware version as your database. As far as I have seen on the Metalink...whenever someone posts an issue relating to Oracle networking, usually one of the inquiry from Oracle support is to see if client/middleware is the same version as the database or not.
