Forced to use uncertified client on win2k!

Hi, I'd really value some informed opinions on a nasty predicament..

I've spent the last few hours browsing the various posts here and on MetaLink regarding 8.0.5 clients on win2k. The responses were (mostly) polite but direct: don't even try it, it's not certified/supported etc. Unfortunately, I have a critical application that is not certified with anything above 8.0.5, and I have to run it (in production) on Win2k clients. The server is 8.0.6 on HPUX11. The vendor for this application certified it with 8.0.5 client on Win2k, but they have since admitted, "at the time we were not aware Oracle never certified this".

My options are pretty straightforward. (A) Use 8.0.5 and lose Oracle certification or (B) use 8.1.7 and lose vendor support. Either way I lose some degree of comfort. I have one other option: (C) upgrade the application, but this will take about 2 man years (please don't ask) and so its seen as the last resort.

I can use option C only if I can show why option A will not work. And this is where I need some help! Despite all the helpful "it's not certified" posts, I have not found any information outlining the problems or potential problems that might occur. Are client connections dropped mid-session for example? Has anyone suffered lost/corrupted data? I need only one specific problem to convince my boss that running anything less than 8.1.7 is a_bad_idea..
