Please always post platform and version, if that's not asked too much. On NT the error happens in two situations: 1 You are on the server and you didn't set ORACLE_SID 2 You are on a client, you didn't set up tnsnames.ora and/or don't specify a service name when connecting.

You could of course also resolve this by reading the installation manual and/or the Troubleshooting chapter in the net8 administrator manual. This type of error usually is being caused by not reading the manual.
