This is interesting - I had exactly the same problem when trying to install on Mandrake 8.1 and Redhat 7.1. I then decided to change distributions to Debian (for other reasons apart from Oracle) and although Debian is not officially supported by Oracle, I thought I'd give it a go.

I had a fresh install of Debian and decided to go with the "woody" version rather than "potato". I installed 8.1.7 and applied the glibc stubs patch from the oracle site - the install all worked fine - no errors/problems at all. I've since done it on a second Debian "woody" system with no problems.

The real problem you will have is that because "woody" is sort of Debians beta release its a bit of a moving target - I cannot honestly say which glibc libraries I had installed when I did the original install. I certainly did use IBMs 1.1.8 jdk as recommended in the documentation. I think the important thing with installing Oracle on Linux is that you follow the install instructions EXACTLY - later versions of jdk or glibc are likely to give you problems and make sure you confirm all the kernel parameters are at least at the levels recommended in the linux install readme file etc.
