I haven't encountered such paranoia before but I can think of at least two possible ways to deal with the issue.

  1. Customise (g)login.sql to modify the sqlplus command prompt to display the service name you are attached to.
  2. Run tools against live and dev environs using different Oracle homes.

I am sure that others will point out the weaknesses of either approach (approach 1 is liable to give a false sense of confidence under some circumstances)
