I would atleast understand your IT departments concern if you want to use Net8 (8.1.6) with Oracle server 7.x. But to continue to use SQL*Net v2.5 with 8.1.6 server on false premise that SQL*Net v2.5 is *more* stable then 8.1.6 Net8 is ludicrous. One thing I can think of is you would *not* be able to deploy any java code using SQL*Net...i.e. if you are utilizing Oracle's JVM. Maybe you should ask your IT department to show you a document to convince you otherwise.
